Herkimer, N.Y — A section of the state Thruway was closed most of the afternoon Monday after an 18-vehicle pile-up near Herkimer.
The accident was reported around 11:23 a.m. A tractor trailer was disabled along the westbound lanes when another tractor trailer hit it and caused several cars to crash, said Sgt. Jack Keller, a spokesperson for the State Police.
The crash is still being investigated but currently involves 15 cars and three tractor trailers, Keller said.
Whiteout conditions contributed to the crash, Keller said.
There was one injury in the crash and the person is in stable condition at Wynn Hospital in Utica, he said.
The state Thruway Authority said at 12:12 p.m. Monday that all lanes were blocked in both directions on I-90 between exits 29A (Little Falls) and 30 (Herkimer) due to the crash.
Those sections of the Thruway reopened just before 4 p.m., according to Albert Moxham, the director of Herkimer County Office of Emergency Services.
Herkimer County is under a snow emergency until 7 p.m. Monday, according to the county office of emergency services. The county also issued a state of emergency, banning all unnecessary travel.
