HOUSTON — Two people are dead after a crash on the Gulf Freeway that was caused by a separate crash early Saturday morning, Houston police said.
This happened on the Gulf Freeway headed south near Griggs around 1 a.m.
The Houston Police Department said the incident started when a woman driving a black sedan was hit from behind and spun around in the main lanes of the freeway. The other car in that crash reportedly took off. The black sedan was left disabled.
After the initial crash, a pickup truck with two women in it pulled to the side of the road to see if they could help the woman in the disabled vehicle. As the passenger of the pickup truck got out of the car, a blue sedan tried to swerve out of the way of the disabled vehicle but ended up crashing into it.
In that crash, the black sedan was pushed into the woman who had gotten out of the pickup truck, killing her.
The woman in the black sedan was also killed. It’s unclear whether she died in the first crash or the second, HPD said.
The driver of the blue sedan, a man, was taken to a hospital and is expected to be OK.
HPD said its Vehicular Crimes Division was working to piece together exactly what happened.
